Macy Mathis was like most other 16-year-olds. She loved spending time with her boyfriend, snapping selfies and hanging out with friends. Despite her similarities with children her age, there was something that set her apart: the bond she shared with her mother.
Typically, teenagers aren’t known for wanting to spend time with their family, but Macy was different. She loved her parents and enjoyed spending time with them. This close-knit bond is what inspired Macy to pen several letters to her mother just a year before her unforeseen, incredibly tragic passing.
When Macy’s mom, Cindy, discovered the letters months later her heart raced. What could her daughter have to say from beyond the grave? Was she emotionally ready to read her words?
As a talented writer, a 15-year-old Macy decided to write a series of letters for Cindy and each had a different theme. There was a letter for days she couldn’t sleep, days she was frustrated with life and a variety of other problems. But when Cindy found a letter titled “Open When… You Miss Me” she didn’t know what to think.
The year after losing Macy in a car crash was the hardest period of Cindy’s life – and all she wanted was closure.
With a heavy heart and nervousness pulsing through her body, Cindy peeled back the envelope. Her daughter’s words immediately brought her to tears.
I’m sorry that you’re missing me. I hope wherever you are or whatever you’re doing you’re okay. I’m probably missing you too.
I honestly don’t like being away from the house for too long. I get homesick pretty easily. When I was little and lived with Dad, I would look forward to being with you…”
“I think some of it was because you always had good food at your house, but most of it was because I just missed you so much.
I will always and forever love you, Mommy. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.
Cindy wiped away tears once she was done reading and sat up straight. This letter was exactly what her heart needed – even though it was one of the most painful things she ever read!
Cindy later took to Facebook to share her thoughts about her daughter’s letter:
“This one was so hard to open. You don’t know how much Mommy misses you! There is not a second of the day that goes by and I don’t think of you. You are my rock, my best friend, my everything. Your brothers are doing such a great job holding me, Hope, and your Daddy together.
I am truly thankful that me, Hope, and Daddy was able to have such a great relationship throughout the years to be able to share every moment, every memory we had with you as a family. If you could only see us three now. Our bond is stronger than before. There’s not a day that goes by we don’t talk to each other.
I am very thankful for the family YOU created before and even now. We love you so very much, baby girl! Mommy misses you more than words could ever express! Goodnight my sweet, beautiful angel.”
While nothing can ever ease the pain in Cindy’s heart, Macy’s words can help numb it temporarily. We wish her nothing but love and healing during this difficult time.
